Community Recordings

Community Recordings is an Dance Music Label based out of Denver Colorado. Originally created as a recording artist in the late 90's, CR releases have found their way into music collections worldwide. In the early days CR was nothing more then me (Jon Nedza) sitting in my basement with an 8-track recorder, 2 mics and a few latin percussion instruments. The sound was far from polished and anytime i sent a DAT out to get mastered it was almost a guarantee that it was getting sent back to me to make level changes. While continuing to learn the ropes of making dance music CR was able to gain some global recognition by getting music signed with some popular labels such as Grayhound, Imperial Dub, Leaf & Nordic Trax to name a few.

Just when i was making some real progress as an aspiring producer i decided to upgrade my studio to a more modern computer setup. This proved to be more hurtful then beneficial. The previous setup i was using really limited what i could do in the studio. I wanted the powerful tools of the computer to work more efficiently but i struggled immensely when it came to using the computer to actually make music. I was able to whip up a few cool EP's but CR was fading quickly into the distance. Around 2004 i switched to Pro Tools and finally started to get back in the groove again. In 2005 i collaborated with then music partner Matt Bandy and signed a really nice record to Nordic Trax. Around that same time i did a few more solo EP's before launching Community Recordings as a label.

By this time i desperately wanted to transform CR from an artist to a legitimate record label but was thrown a bit of a curve ball when the 3rd party funding for it was removed. So i did what any other broke and somewhat discouraged dj/producer would do...I started a hosting a monthly party here in Denver. Appropriately named "Community" these events were classic. Myself and a few friends pooled our efforts and hosted one of the best parties in Colorado, bringing in some great talent from around the world. Community guest djs included first time appearances by Harvey, Luke Solomon, Peter Kruder, Q-Burns, Mark Grant, Trentemoller, JT Donaldson and Metro Area to name a few. The Community parties lasted from 2005-2007 and while i didn't make much music during this period these events played an essential role in my quest to do something important with CR.

Watching the days of vinyl being the primary medium for DJs slowly fade into the backround and digital downloading make it's way to the front of the line was an interesting time for all of us. Bottomline is digital downloads are here to stay and I feel that those of us who except that and are embracing that will continue to prosper and create new opportunities for future generations of DJs and producers to benefit from. The idea behind building an online store/label for Community Recordings was to really build a model for how a small independent label can operate. I feel that labels need to control of there music from start to finish. Don't get me wrong, online distributors do a great job of providing new music to the masses, however i think the future for devoted producers and labels is about selling direct to the public. But all things aside, at the end of the day i just hope that Community Recordings becomes a valuable tool for you to find great music.

Welcome to the new Community Recordings!! Enjoy the new site and keep on rockin!!
